On the beach at Palavas-les-Flots in southern France, Pirate loads the long surf rod behind his shoulder and drives it forward. Line peels off the reel as the rig sails over the water in a clean arc before dropping into the sea with a splash.
A few seconds later, the whole setup disappears below the surface. Did it land where the fish were moving? Were the two hook baits sitting naturally? Would any fish come close enough to investigate? From the beach, Pirate could only make an educated guess. This time, he wanted to see what actually happened after the cast.

Surfcasting Is About More Than Distance
A big cast may be the most obvious part of surfcasting, but distance alone does not catch fish. Beach anglers read the water first. Waves tend to break harder over shallower ground, darker water often means more depth, and troughs or changes in bottom contour can give fish natural routes to travel and feed. Put that together with the wind, tide and conditions, and an experienced angler decides whether the next rig should go short, long or somewhere else entirely.
Summer surfcasting on the Mediterranean coast often means fishing natural baits such as marine worms for species including gilthead seabream and marbled seabream, which feed close to sandy bottoms on worms, shellfish and small crustaceans. Calm on the Surface, Plenty Happening Below
The footage shows sunlight reaching all the way down to a clean sandy bottom. Individual grains of sand and shifting patches of light are easy to make out. The two hook baits sit just above the bottom, the branch lines hanging naturally and moving gently with the water.
Then a silver fish swims into frame and comes close to the baits. It never fully takes one, but the footage answers an important question straight away: there were fish down there.
From the rod tip, this could easily have looked like nothing more than another quiet cast. No obvious bite, no fish on the beach. But the underwater fishing video tells a different story. A fish had already reached the bait. It just did not eat.
When Fish Show Up but Don’t Bite, There’s Something to Learn
That changes the way an angler can review the cast. Was the fish simply not interested in that bait? Was the bait moving naturally enough? Did the fish approach but stay cautious? Or was it a smaller fish dealing with a hook and bait combination intended for something bigger?
One clip cannot give a definite answer to every question, but it gives Pirate somewhere useful to start. Instead of treating “no bite” as “no fish,” he can look again at bait choice, hook size, presentation and casting distance before deciding what to change. Bringing the Hidden Half of the Cast Back to Shore
